Gorgas Swamp
East of the Tupelo Gum Swamp is the Gorgas Swamp, again populated with tupelo trees. This area borders both sides of General Gorgas Street, south
of Cadillac Square Park. In the past, sections of this area were being destroyed by excessive all-terrain vehicular traffic, which compacts the soil, generating ruts and gullies that serve to drain the water off the surface, thus interrupting the hydrologic cycle.
DIBS has acquired 14 properties in this area, highlighted by a contiguous strip of undeveloped properties on the west side of General Gorgas Street. Unfortunately, home construction in this area has increased and valuable bird habitat is being lost as lots are cleared for development. Birding from the road is rewarding in this area especially during spring and fall migration.
